Le lettere di Bar Kokhba, sono documenti storiografici di grandissimo interesse che in vario modo consentono una visione più chiara della vita, anche quotidiana, della Giudea dei primi due secoli dopo Cristo. Eccezionali questi scritti sono anche per risalire alla persona stessa del leader della seconda rivolta giudaica contro i romani, sorta e soffocata nel sangue nel breve volgere di tre anni (132-135 d.C.). Dopo un'introduzione storica nella quale vengono inquadrate le vicende che videro protagonista Bar Kokhba e i suoi seguaci e s'illustra la vitalità di questa figura nella tradizione giudaica antica e anche nella società israeliana odierna, di ogni lettera sono presentati il testo in lingua originale, la traduzione e un commento storico e linguistico. Due appendici completano il volume, una prima dedicata a un testo rinvenuto solo in anni recentissimi e in circostanze non chiare, anch'esso riconducibile al periodo della seconda rivolta, la seconda all'importanza che i testi di Nahal Hever e di altre zone circostanti hanno per la ricostruzione della storia del testo biblico. This comprehensive exploration of language and literacy in the multi-lingual environment of Roman Palestine (c. 63 B.C.E. to 136 C.E.) is based on Michael Wise's extensive study of 145 Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Nabataean contracts and letters preserved among the Bar Kokhba texts, a valuable cache of ancient Middle Eastern artifacts. His investigation of Judean documentary and epistolary culture derives for the first time numerical data concerning literacy rates, language choices, and writing fluency during the two-century span between Pompey's conquest and Hadrian's rule. He explores questions of who could read in these ancient times of Jesus and Hillel, what they read, and how language worked in this complex multi-tongued milieu. Included also is an analysis of the ways these documents were written and the interplay among authors, secretaries, and scribes. Additional analysis provides readers with a detailed picture of the people, families, and lives behind the texts.
